Information

David Hardy was born in Southampton in 1968. He studied Fine Art, Printmaking at Winchester School of Art in 1995. After graduating he moved to London and worked at The Royal Society of Arts and London College of Fashion as resident graphic designer.

David now lives and works in West Wales where he strives to represent the land, seas and skies that surround him and those that are bound to him by memory. David takes inspiration from the natural world, responding to a place or an experience. Often referencing the landscape, photography & found forms as starting points. David is a former graphic designer and his keen eye for composition, and form is reflected in his abstract pieces. By using a reduced palette he creates work that focuses on depth, tone & texture without the distraction of colour.

David’s work has been featured in Vogue, Elle Decoration, Living Etc and House & Garden. His work is in private collections worldwide.

Statement

My work is deeply influenced by my relationship with nature, particularly the tangible aspects like landscapes, weather, and the physical environment. However, my approach to these elements is not about direct representation. I don’t aim to document or create a literal view of a place. Instead, I paint to evoke a feeling or capture an atmosphere—something that resonates emotionally with the viewer, whatever that may be. I tend to use a reduced palette in my work as I find colour can be a distraction and that’s why I avoid overloading the work with details. I want the viewer to engage with the piece on a deeper level. By leaving things undefined, I create space for the viewer to be present with the artwork. Instead of analysing every detail, the viewer feels the emotional currents and rhythms of the piece intuitively.

In a way, my artwork is about creating an ongoing dialogue—between the natural world, the work itself, and the viewer’s internal world. By allowing space for interpretation, the work continues to evolve and resonate with the viewer.
